Vibe: Beneath the radar – shops, art, food and clubs
- Really special drinks are served in teapots at World Bar in the Cross, on a cool rooftop bar at Kings Cross Hotel, at Café Pacifico where you can sample more than 50 different types of tequila, or at the retro bar, Madame Fling Flong's in Newtown.
- Some of the best underground clubs are in the Cross – Moulin Rouge, Lady Lux, Favela Bar, Trademark, Dragon Fly and Hugo's. Get a big night out at Copperlily Nightclub in the Cross, Phoenix, Spectrum, Vegas or Q Bar along Oxford Street in Darlo and Purple Sneakers at the Abercrombie in Glebe and The Gaelic Theatre in Surry Hills.
- Semi-underground art abounds in artists' collectives, garages and basements across town. Look out for BJB, a cluster of artists' studios and exhibition spaces in the basement of an old molasses factory in Surry Hills. Guerrilla knitter Denise Litchfield users recycled wool to cover lamp posts, trees and braches and street furniture with stripey creations around Newtown.
- Next big thing – seek out original art, jewellery, fashion, vintage to boho at Paddington Markets, Bondi and Glebe markets every Saturday.
- One-off shops are Broadway Betty for glitzy party frocks and vintage footwear, Ra Ra Superstar for pre-loved designer shoes, Gertrude and Alice for second hand books and great coffee, Ginger and Smart for fab fashion – or let Sydney Unwrapped take you on a tour to get the inside scoop.
