The Rocks is a stronghold of galleries, theatres and historic buildings
As the site of the original settlement of Sydney, The Rocks has an amazing legacy of colonial era buildings. The list includes stone waterfront warehouses, cottages, churches, pubs, wharves, the Observatory station on the summit of Observatory Hill and some of the oldest pubs in the country.
This is also a stronghold for the performing arts, home to the Sydney Theatre Company and the Sydney Dance Company, which have put Sydney on the international performing arts map.
The Museum of Contemporary Art is Australia’s only museum dedicated to exhibiting, interpreting and collecting contemporary art. At the other end of the scale is the tiny Susannah Place Museum, a tiny, working-class terrace house that paints a fascinating picture of life in The Rocks in the 1840s.
